Art Basel Qatar 2026 : Ahmed Mater at the Inaugural Edition of Art Basel Qatar 2026

ATHR Gallery is pleased to announce the participation of acclaimed Saudi artist Ahmed Mater in the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar 2026, marking a milestone for contemporary art from the Kingdom and the Gulf region. 

ATHR’s presentation Temporal Migration, a major photographic project that extends Mater’s long-standing engagement with Makkah- its histories, expansions and the forces shaping its rapidly evolving terrain. In this series, Mater portrays the city as a living organism rising from the desert: shifting, expanding and continuously redefined by construction and technology. 

Seen from afar, Makkah appears as an encrypted map of movement- cranes forming constellations, roads cutting through mountains, construction sites multiplying like neural pathways. Mater doesn’t present the city as fixed or eternal; rather, he reveals it as a process in motion shaped by invisible economies, logistical systems and architectural ambitions. 

The Empty Land, inspired by nineteenth-century descriptions of the American West, presents aerial views of silent streets, military bases, abandoned public projects and discarded oil barrels. The series reads as a stark meditation on landscape, power and the residues of modern development. 

In the diptych Black Stone, Mater offers a striking, visceral reflection on faith and collective devotion. His portrayal of pilgrims rushing toward the Kaaba captures not only the physical momentum of Hajj but also the spiritual gravity that draws millions to a single point each year. 

Born in 1979, Mater grew up during a period of profound ideological, economic and cultural shifts in Saudi Arabia. These early experiences- set against the backdrop of the oil boom, regional conflict and tensions between religion and power - continue to shape his practice. His work consistently traces the intersections of tradition and innovation, heritage and globalisation and the psychological impact of rapid social transformation. 

With this presentation at Art Basel Qatar 2026, ATHR Gallery reaffirms its commitment to showcasing artists who challenge and expand the cultural narratives of the region.
