Sultan Bin Fahad Saudi, b. 1971
In
this work, he references objects of celebrations, metal boxes that are usually
given at weddings in the Kingdom and how these social and cultural symbols can
be read and translated by other communities. After researching different
artisanal practices, he collaborated with a Muslim community in Nigeria, that
specializes in beadwork, and he commissioned them to reinterpret the designs
and motifs of the metal boxes through their artisanal work. The result is not
just an exchange of cultural and social norms and commodities, but also an
artistic reimagination and an insight into how artistic translation happens in
an economy of exchange and circulation of ideas.
