‘Nafs’, meaning self, speaks to the layered and elusive nature of the self. In this exhibition, the self of the subject confronts the self of the viewer. The paintings reflect back a quiet irony and a curious openness. Familiar characters and symbols are subverted and reinterpreted through Lulua’s lens in a gentle confession of what is known but often unspoken, what is seen but rarely named.
