ATHR is joining over 160 galleries from around the world in this year’s edition of FRIEZE London, taking place October 12-16 in Regent’s Park. ATHR’s booth will feature the works of 9 of our most prominent artists, who work across multiple disciplines and subject matter. Their diverse practices engage with more traditional mediums such as photography, ceramics, and painting, as well as more unconventional materials such as Sarah Abu Abdullah’s resin and tomato seed sculptures and Zahrah Alghmadi’s What Lies Behind The Sun (2022) which also incorporates natural materials in the sculptures, as displayed with the use of local dried branches.
The subjects the artists tackle cover a spectrum of narratives varying from the personal scale to the macro-cultural, such as Ahmed Mater’s pieces from his new work Ashab Al-Lal commissioned for Wadi AlFann ('Valley of the Arts'), a new cultural destination in the desert of AlUla, north-west Saudi Arabia, opening in 2024. Mater’s pieces connect past traditions in astronomy studies to a timeless present. Zahrah is joined by fellow Venice Biennale Saudi Pavilion representative artist Muhannad Shono (2019, 2022 respectively). Shono’s work On Finding Meaning No.1 investigates the power of mark-making in the birth of new transformative landscapes of meaning, the piece was also recently featured in the inaugural edition of the Diriyah Contemporary Arts Biennale. Mohamed Alfaraj’s Fossils Of series documents everyday life in his environment through photography. His photos also feature depictions of his ephemeral palm frond and husk sculptures that immortalize his site specific works and embody a distillation of spirituality and materiality.
